Portrait Weekly Framing: Trump & the Golden Dome
Welcome to this week’s edition of the Portrait Weekly Framing. Today, we’ll be researching Trump’s desire to build a new, advanced missile defense system leveraging satellites — the “Golden Dome.”
Trump loves gold. His New York City tower drips with it, and the President frequently boasts gold displays of power. Perhaps unsurprisingly then, Trump named a recent initiative to mirror Israel’s “Iron Dome” the “Golden Dome.”
Specifically, Trump has begun floating ideas to build an extraordinarily complex missile defense system. According to recent posts and videos from the WSJ, this system would leverage an array of satellites to detect, track, and deny missiles. Importantly, this “system of systems” could cost up to $830B over two decades.
With such a potentially staggering sum of money going toward this initiative, I decided to use Portrait to learn what players in the defense & aerospace industry would benefit from such an intense undertaking. Particularly, I homed in on companies who can build satellites, launch them, or participate in the ongoing communication required to maintain such a network.
To start, I ran a screen with the following simple prompt:
“Find me companies that: sell satellites, space equipment, or space services.”
I quickly encountered a significant list of companies involved in satellites and space, with varying degrees of exposure and types of business models. As an example, Rocket Lab USA popped up for its ability to sell satellites and provide launch services to space.

Nonetheless, with several different companies populating our screen, I fed the companies to Portrait’s Research tool for further refinement. I specifically prompted the following:
Sort these companies based on their exposure to space and satellite revenue. Specifically, I am looking to find the companies which are best positioned to benefit from a significant increase in spending on satellites and space-based defense systems.

From these results, I again found RocketLab to be most interesting, as it fell under the “Pure-Play & Specialized Space Companies” category and already possessed contracts with the DoD and NRO. As my curiosity landed on RocketLab, I then ran the following Research prompt for the company specifically:
With announcements of the potential "Golden Dome" project, I am looking to understand how much certain companies will benefit from the initiative's drive to increase satellite and space-based defense systems. Please evaluate RocketLab and help me understand how significant this proposal is to the company's prospects, and whether it can create a meaningful lift to earnings or growth.
As a highlight from the results, I again learned that RocketLab has strong positioning in the space-based defense ecosystem and with valuable launch capabilities:
RocketLab's Potential to Benefit from the "Golden Dome" Initiative
Executive Summary
The recently announced "Golden Dome" missile defense initiative represents a potentially significant opportunity for RocketLab (RKLB), given the company's established position in both launch services and space systems manufacturing. With a projected budget of $175 billion and requirements for hundreds or thousands of satellites, this initiative aligns well with RocketLab's capabilities and strategic direction. While the company faces competition from larger players like SpaceX, RocketLab's end-to-end space solutions, defense relationships, and timely development of the Neutron rocket position it to capture meaningful value from this program. The initiative could accelerate RocketLab's already impressive growth trajectory and improve its path to profitability, though the magnitude of impact will depend on contract capture rates and program execution.
RocketLab's Current Positioning
Defense and National Security Footprint
